Beyond the Bounty – The Real Value for Hackers and Organizations

Over an hour session on the 2nd July 2020, HackerOne’s Laurie Mercer, Kindred Group’s Jacob Mattson, Deliveroo’s Baden Delamore and Cyber Security YouTuber Katie Paxton-Fear discussed important aspects of bug hunting in relation to the cyber security of large organisations. We synthesized their discussion into rich visuals.

The challenge

Our challenge was to turn this hour-long discussion between four panel members into one cohesive image, translating it into engaging and communicative visual language. It was important to do this using HackerOne’s brand guidelines and an overarching theme. It was also crucial that elements of the image could stand alone and be adapted as individual social media assets.

The Scribe Session

To capture this thorough and rich conversation we broke the debate into several scenes, allowing us to focus and explain related points and information in an interlinked way. These also allowed us to effectively re-purpose the big picture for social media, priming aspects such as the section on hackers as an extension of security teams for Instagram. Basing our visual thinking around retro-gaming gave the overall image a connected feel and allowed us to inject relatable cultural references, charm and humour.

The cumulative effect of the illustrations, visual style and theme was an image which delivered key points and data in an engaging, memorable and re-usable way, in keeping with HackerOne’s branding strategy.
