In the face of a learning crisis, the International Institute for Educational Planning and UNESCO have been working to enhance the quality management of education practices in several African countries. To help their team report findings from their Quality Management Programme, they asked us to share their experiences through accessible explainer videos aimed at a variety of different stakeholders. 

The Brief

Our creative team had to make a series of five explainer videos that would work in both English and French. These five films needed to complement each other and also work as one combined video. Each video had many technical and complex points to make, and our creative team had to explain these to unfamiliar audiences without compromising the information or usefulness of the videos in live discussion sessions. 

The Explainer Video

Over this series of five films, our team used written and visual storytelling to take viewers through the aims of the programme, challenges faced by education systems, the programme’s methods, what it found and examples of the programme’s success.

To do this, we harnessed the power of explainer videos to make even complex ideas relatable and engaging, using characters and settings that all viewers would be able to connect with.

Data and process visualisation played an important role in the messages of these videos. We used creative visual thinking to deliver this information in ways that made it memorable and understandable. Icon imagery supported this, allowing us to highlight key points made by the voiceover and add extra detail. 

Across all five videos, our team used an illustration style that was engaging yet suitably realistic to hold viewer attention and respect the subject matter. This uniform style, combined with careful narrative choices, allowed us to later combine all the videos into one in a seamless manner.  

Delivered in both French and English, our explainer video series gave the ideal introduction to each element of the Quality Management Programme during live sessions.

The UNESCO International Institute of Educational Planning is dedicated to educational planning and management. For six decades, it has been supporting Member States to design and implement educational policies and plans that focus on both national and international goals.
