World Bank

Safety First

A growing body of work is showing that safety nets overwhelmingly reduce gender-based violence (GBV), which improves the efficacy of projects that reduce poverty and develop human capital. The World Bank have shared how to leverage safety nets in a recent report. We collaborated with the World Bank to create a whiteboard explainer video to raise awareness about this report and share its key takeaways.

The Brief

In less than 90 seconds, our whiteboard animation needed to explain the core messages within the World Bank’s report and raise awareness about gender-based violence. In addition, our video needed to provide staff at the World Bank with tools to help them develop programmes that include safety nets. Our whiteboard explainer video needed to take an engaging tone that respected the seriousness of the topic and piqued the viewers' interest in the report. Promotion of the video was an important consideration, and our project included the creation of short social media trailers.

The Explainer Video

Our explainer video used a professional and serious voiceover to explain the scale of GBV and challenge the assumption that safety nets increase GBV before going on to explain the benefits of safety nets. Our cast of relatable characters was a cornerstone of our visual storytelling, allowing us to reflect viewer concerns and embody the advantages that come with using safety nets. We used tailored illustrations to present data and findings in memorable ways, as our icon imagery and creative visual thinking underscored key points made by the voiceover. We drew our narrative to a close by focusing the audience’s attention on the World Bank’s report, the resources it offers and the positive outcomes these resources can facilitate.
