The challenge
This project required the creation of a series of ten punchy animations that built on four previous films. This meant they had to maintain the same style as the previous films while explaining crucial and specific details in a concise, clear and engaging way. Making efficient use of time and visual language was essential, the layout needed to work both as animation and a poster. We had to appeal to an audience of new and experienced players, holding their attention as we presented this important information in a lasting and memorable way.
The films
This series of ten short ‘snackable’ animations focus on crucial details within the World Handicap System each player will need to know.
The basis of these films was a strong layout which allowed us map information in space clearly, expanding on key points. These strong layouts guided viewers around the animation, framing information in an accessible way, making a clear and informative big picture perfect for poster purposes. Accompanying these layouts was open and understandable visual language presented with charming characters, imagery and visual metaphors. We included clouds and gusts of wind carrying leaves to visualise the impact of weather while metaphors like the use of a cloth cap and a metal cap allowed us to talk about soft and hard caps in the World Handicap System. We used a wide range of characters to make the films relatable for a global audience and mirrored this by using a wide range of voiceover artists. The culmination of these factors was a ten-part series which used the strengths of whiteboard animation and visual thinking to explain detailed and important information in a bespoke, understandable, engaging and memorable way.
About the client
Representing golfing national bodies around the world, we worked with the UK’s R&A and America’s United States Golf Association (USGA) to create a series of highly focused animations. The R&A and USGA commissioned this series of films to inform golfers about important aspects of the World Handicap System, making them available as a public digital and physical resource.
