Cultures of Dignity
The Scrapbook
Dignity applies to everyone and treating people with a lack of dignity can cause serious problems between people and groups. Cultures of Dignity care deeply about this and we worked with them to create an animated explainer film raising awareness about the distinction between respect and dignity.
The challenge
Creating this explainer film required us to explain the concepts of respect and dignity, showing viewers how their presence and absence impacted on society. We needed to show a range of social settings whilst maintaining a focus on young people, incorporating a tone that highlighted the seriousness of the matter but also gave hope. It was vital the film delivered strong takeaway messages.
The film
Over two minutes we explained the concepts of respect and dignity, highlighting the importance of dignity in the world. To do this, we used a combination of pure animation and illustration alongside animation and illustration that augmented real world scenes. These included heated and aggressive meetings and respect violations in schools and offices, acting as stages that not only allowed us to explain the origins and definitions of respect and dignity. On these stages, we played out scenarios that showed the impact a lack of these had on the world. These settings also enabled us to make the film relatable, which we extended through the inclusion of diverse characters and popular activities. An important part of the storytelling process was to state the difference between dignity and respect. We took a serious tone throughout to emphasize the importance of the subject, moving towards hope as the positive effects of dignity were explained. A measured and clear voiceover by Rosalind Wiseman led viewers through the animation and focused attention on the implications of these for young people.
