Rheumatic Heart Disease
There is a pressing need to prioritise rheumatic fever (RF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD) on the public health agenda. Millions of vulnerable individuals continue to be affected by these conditions.
To rally support from policymakers and donors, the WHO collaborated with Cognitive to create a compelling whiteboard animation. This animation aimed to humanise the issue and inspire investment in preventative measures, focusing on the Eastern Mediterranean region.
The Brief
We crafted a 4-minute film to humanise the issue and provide policymakers and donors with a clear call to action. The animation aimed to give the problem a relatable face of hope while framing it in an understandable manner. It was essential to make the animation regionally appropriate for the Eastern Mediterranean region and to tap into emotion without making our treatment of the subject too light.
The Explainer Animation
The voiceover script outlines the devastating impact of RF and RHD, emphasising the importance of prevention and the necessity for investment in primary and secondary preventative measures.
We brought the narrative to life with carefully researched illustrations designed to reflect the region’s diversity, while ensuring cultural appropriateness and sensitivity.
Visual metaphors, like an anthropomorphic sand-timer character, added depth to the narrative, guiding viewers through the complexities of the disease.
As they watch, we hope audiences will be taken on a journey from a place of concern to a feeling of hope, spurring policymakers and donors to prioritise RF and RHD on their public health agendas.
